Cakes by Melanie. is a family owned and operated business that began as a hobby many years ago.
After several years of being a stay at home mom, Melanie discovered a passion for the culinary arts when she began creating highly decorated cakes for her friends and family. Melanie watched, and enjoyed her mom’s wonderful baking as she grew up. Melanie dabbled at baking for many years.
The first elaborate decorated cakes that she made were cakes that her daughters requested for their birthdays when they were young. They would see these phenomenal cakes in magazines and pick out a specific one for their birthday. Melanie would never tell them "no" even though she knew the cakes would be quite a challenge! Not all of the cakes were perfect, but all in all they were good and she enjoyed the creative process of making the cake personal and bringing an idea to life.
The first cake that Melanie made besides your typical birthday cake, was a Barbie doll cake for her oldest daughter, Kelsey. But the more elaborate cakes that were to follow were for her youngest daughter, Courtney, who always managed to pick out the biggest and most challenging cakes! The cake that really proved to Melanie that she could do cakes professionally, was her parent’s 50th anniversary cake. Encouraged by her family, sisters and cake decorating instructor, Orna, Melanie decided to do a 3-tiered cake to give to her parents, on their special day and it turned out beautiful.
With the support of her husband Glen, and her two daughters, she pursued her talent. Melanie took cake classes any where she could find them including Wilton classes at the local Michael’s, the prestigious Art Institute of Atlanta and from the Food Network Challenge judge, Nicholas Lodge. While honing her cake decorating skills in a local bakery, she dreamed of establishing her own bakery, where creativity, quality and design would never be sacrificed for efficiency.
